Sewn with Purpose: Gabrielle Kilgore on Fashion, Craftsmanship, and Community
March 2025
An intimate interview with the visionary designer on her creative journey, inspirations, and redefining garments with every stitch.
It’s a cool afternoon in Atlanta, and Gabrielle Kilgore greets me with an effortless charm that mirrors the grace of her designs. Sitting in a coffee shop, surrounded by music, inspiration, and strangers, she exudes the energy of an artist who understands the depth of her craft. As the designer behind Fondé, she’s carving out a space that fuses sustainability, heritage, and craftsmanship, all while telling deeply personal stories through fabric. We dive into her journey, inspirations, and the future she envisions for fashion.
Personal & Creative Journey
I start by asking Gabrielle what first pulled her into the world of fashion and how her identity as a young creative has shaped her approach. She leans forward thoughtfully before responding.
“Since I was a child, I’ve always been fascinated with fashion, style, and the theatrics of it all,” she says with a smile. “As a young creative, I’ve appreciated the time, craftsmanship, and creativity that goes into design. My aesthetic has shifted a lot over the years, but I now focus on sustainability and craftsmanship in my work.”
Reflecting on her journey, I ask if there was a moment that solidified her purpose in the industry. Without hesitation, she recalls a defining milestone.
“I’ve come across many opportunities that have helped me along my journey, but I’ll go back to January 2024 when I had my first fashion show for Fondé,” she says. “That moment truly solidified my purpose.”
Fondé reimagines fashion through a lens of raw innovation. Patchworked denim and collaged plaids fuse the past with the present, crafting silhouettes that defy convention. A rebellion of textures, a harmony of chaos; wearable art.
Cultural Influence & Storytelling
As we talk about the essence of her collections, Gabrielle’s eyes light up. “Exploring new textiles and learning how to play with them is something I want to do more of,” she explains. “I want to tell the story of heritage, craftsmanship, and community through my collection. You can expect a few more accessories in the next one.”
Atlanta’s influence on her work is undeniable, and I ask how the city’s creative energy has shaped her designs.
“Atlanta has truly inspired me,” she says. “The creative community here—artists, musicians, designers—has cultivated an audience that roots for you. It feels sensational. For the future of fashion in Atlanta, I hope to see more artists who love being on the machine and bringing their visions to life.”
Challenges & Growth
Every designer faces obstacles, and I’m curious about the biggest challenges Gabrielle has encountered. She pauses before answering, her voice carrying the weight of experience.
“My ambitions are really high,” she admits. “I believe that with the right collaboration, no challenge is too big. My biggest contender is myself and getting over that little word—fear.”
I ask about the biggest misconceptions people have about being a designer, and she laughs. “That I can make everything and create an outfit for you instantly! Baby, I’m still working on the last thing and just picked up a new project. Designing is time-consuming and requires a lot of attention to detail. Please, no pressure—good things take time.”
Intersection of Fashion, Art & Community
Fashion is often seen as wearable art, and I ask Gabrielle how she perceives the intersection of fashion, art, and culture in her work. She leans back, considering her response.
“Fashion replicates the times we live in,” she says. “When you put on a piece, you embody the atmosphere, the people who inspire you, and where you come from. In my work, I like to reflect nostalgia and storytelling. When others wear it, it becomes an icebreaker in the room.”
The conversation shifts to collaboration, and she speaks passionately about its role in her creative process. “Collaboration is community,” she says. “When you’re able to cultivate a relationship with the intention of shining with others and on others, it makes the creative process exciting. Someone sees you and recognizes that this work is special. Platforms like The Black Editorial & LOUD PALETTE, la GALERIE can serve as another media outlets showcasing the range of Black art and creatives. There are never enough platforms amplifying Black voices—the perfect time is now and forever.”

As we wrap up, I can’t help but admire Gabrielle’s dedication to her craft. She isn’t just creating fashion—she’s weaving history, culture, and sustainability into every thread. And as she continues shaping her path, one thing is clear her impact is only just beginning, and her garments will continue to tell a story for generations to come.

Vision & Impact
As our conversation winds down, I ask Gabrielle what she would change about the industry to better support underrepresented designers. Her response is immediate.
“Immediate grants, mentors, and internships designed specifically for Black designers and creatives to receive the tools needed to succeed,” she says firmly. “There are a few, but not nearly enough.”
And finally, I ask her about the legacy she hopes to leave. She takes a deep breath before answering.
“I want to tell stories through clothing. Every stitch and detail should be intentional. Clothing from different eras and families tell a story, and connection is crucial at this time. I want my work to remain connected to that idea.”
